For Memorial Day weekend, we went camping at Lake Vermillion. We actually cleaned up the camper and brought it to the campsite on Thursday night. On Friday, John had the day off of work, so he got groceries, pre-made some food, and then grabbed the kids and got the camper all set up after lunch.
I had to work a #1 late shift, and it was raining when I got off work at around 5:30pm. So, I just called it a day, relaxed at home, got a good night's sleep and I went out to the campsite the next morning.
We had a nice little weekend of camping. It was chilly and cloudy, and not the best weather, but we made the best out of it. On Saturday, we hiked on some trails and we tried to find the "golden fish" for a prize, but we were not successful. The kids also had it in their head to go paddle boarding, so in 65 degree, cloudy weather, the kids were in the lake paddle boarding. I don't know how they did that, because it was freezing cold, but they seemed to enjoy themselves. We had chili, a campfire, and fresh bread for supper, and it never tasted so good. After supper, we ran to Mitchell to go to Walmart for a couple supplies and then we also stopped at Cabela's to look around and explore. The kids really liked all the animals and just looking around.
Sunday turned into a beautiful day. It was sunny and warm and just a great day. Elliott made some friends at the park, and he ended up finding some water balloons in the camper, so that was a big hit with a bunch of the campground kids. Elliott ran around with those kids for hours, they were all having a blast. Emma hung with mom and dad, and we played catch, went on bike rides, and just enjoyed the campsite. Eventually, we went back to the lake to paddle board and swim a little (the kids did, it was still too cold for me). Jim and Barb joined us for supper. We had pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, fruit, chips and dip and pickles. It was a good little supper. Then, Jim, Barb, Elliott, and John did a little fishing with the boat, and Emma and I started a fire and enjoyed a nice campfire.
On Monday, we biked and went on some walks in the morning, and then we started packing up to head home. It was a great weekend of camping, but it was a lot of work since it was our first trip of the summer. Since we had two vehicles, I took the kids, food, and dirty laundry home with me and started getting things cleaned and put away while John hauled the camper to the farm.
It was a chilly camping weekend filled with memories!
